Santa Clara, UT Overview
Santa Clara, UT is a growing town with a population that doubled in the 1990’s to approximately 6000 people today. Located in the southern part of Utah, about 100 miles from Las Vegas, Nevada, Santa Clara is one of the oldest settlements in Washington County.
Santa Clara History
In 1853 several men from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints were sent on a mission to this area of Utah to organize some outposts at Parowan and Harmony. Jacob Hamblin led the group southward and arrived at the Santa Clara River in June of 1854. The Indians they encountered there were friendly to the missionaries who instructed them in the “civilized” way of planting and sowing. It wasn’t long before a permanent settlement was set up on the Santa Clara and the men's families joined them in this frontier.
Having introduced agriculture to this dry climate region, there was an obvious need to find a way to get water to the crops. So, in order to irrigate the crops, the settlers built a dam on the Santa Clara to get water for their crops. Thus, the harvest season of 1855 produced very well and the cotton seeds from that year were saved for replanting, much to the pleasure of Brigham Young. Soon, orchards and vineyards were added to the agricultural scene.
Swiss settlers came to settle in Santa Clara in November 1861. Together, the Swiss and the Mormons erected a stone fort and other buildings, most of which were destroyed the next year by a flood. But these settlers, some who lived in dugout houses, some who had suffered and survived the flood as well as drought and starvation, still persevered. Today, Santa Clara, with its shady tree-lined main street, is a wonderful testament to the early settlers and their determination to remain here and make this place their home though early times were hard and troublesome.
